George doesn’t like playing by himself

• 乔治 = qiáozhì, the Chinese name of Peppa Pig’s brother George.
• 不 = bù, no
• 喜欢 = xǐhuan, like
• 自己 = zìjǐ, self
• 玩 = wán, to play. Read about how to use er-coloring in my focused article.
• 自己 + verb means doing something by one’s self. For example, 自己吃 = zìjǐ chī, eat by yourself, 自己看 = zìjǐ kàn, go look yourself or watch it by yourself

qiáozhì xiǎngyào yìqǐ wánr
乔治想要一起玩儿
George wants to play together (with Peppa and Suzy).

• 想要 = xiǎngyào, to want to
• 一起 = yìqǐ, together with

bùxíng, qiáozhì. wǒ zài hé sūxī wán ne.
不行，乔治。我在和苏西玩呢。
No, George. I am playing with SuXi.

• 不行 = bùxíng, No, not allowed. Learn more about how to say No in Chinese!
• 我 = wǒ, I/me
• 在 = zài, currently doing something
• 在玩 = zài wán, playing
• 和 = hé, and, together with
• 苏西 = sūxī, the Chinese name of Suzy, Peppa Pig’s best friend.
• A 在和 B do something = A zài hé B do something, A is doing something together with B
• 呢 = ne, a colloquial expression used at the end of the sentence to emphasize “it’s true”.

nǐ yīnggāi qù biéde dìfāng wán
你应该去别的地方玩
You should go play somewhere else.

• 你 = nǐ, you
• 应该 = yīnggāi, should
• 去 = qù, to go
• 别的 = biéde, else, other
• 地方 = dìfāng, place

qiáozhì xiǎng hé pèiqí wán
乔治想和佩奇玩
George wants to play with Peppa.

• 佩奇 = pèiqí, the Chinese name of our protagonist Peppa Pig.

tā gǎndào yǒudiǎnr gūdān
他感到有点儿孤单
He feels a bit lonely.

• 他 = tā, he. The same sound also can refer to female she.
• 感到 = gǎndào, to feel
• 有点 = yǒudiǎn, a little bit
• 孤单 = gūdān, lonely

qiáozhì, wǒ xūyào bāngmáng
乔治，我需要帮忙。
George, I need help.

• 需要 = xūyào, need. Very commonly used expression.
• 帮忙 = bāngmáng, help. This used as a noun here.

wǒ xiànzài zài zuò qiǎokèlì bǐnggān ne
我现在在做巧克力饼干呢。
I am making chocolate cookies now.

• 现在 = xiànzài, now.
• 在 = zài, currently doing. You notice that 现在 and 在 both indicate she is currently doing something. It’d be okay to omit 现在 but you’d have to keep 在 because it turns the verb “to make” into “making”.
• 做 = zuò, to do or to make. 在做 is doing, making. It implies baking in this context.
• 巧克力 = qiǎokèlì, chocolate. Direct transcription of the English word.
• 饼干 = bǐnggān, cookies.

wǒ xūyào nǐ bāng wǒ tiǎn yíxià zhège wǎn
我需要你帮我舔一下这个碗
I need you to give this bowl a lick.

• 帮 = bāng, help, can only be used as a verb.
• 舔 = tiǎn, lick.
• 一下 = yíxià, once.
• 舔一下 = tiǎn yíxià, give it a lick. Read about related expressions here: Repeating verbs in Chinese.
• 这个 = zhège, this.
• 碗 = wǎn, bowl.
• You can omit the 我需要 = wǒ xūyào in this sentence and still convey the same meaning in this context.

qiáozhì xǐhuan bāng māma zuò bǐnggān
乔治喜欢帮妈妈做饼干
George likes to help mom make cookies.

• 喜欢 + verb = xǐhuan + verb, to like to do something.

dàn tā gèng xiǎngyào hé pèiqí wán
但他更想要和佩奇玩
But he’d rather play with Peppa.

• 但 = dàn, but.
• 更 = gèng, more (comparison)
