Show Notes for Learn Chinese with Peppa Pig Season 01 Episode 04 Part 3
nǐmen dōu gēn wǒ lái ba, lái hēchá
你们都跟我来吧,来喝茶
You all come with me, come drink tea
- 你们 = nǐmen, you (plural)
- 都 = dōu, all
- 跟 = gēn, to follow
- 我 = wǒ, I/me
- 来 = lái, to come
- 跟我来 = gēn wǒ lái, follow me, a set phrase
- 喝 = hēchá, drink
- 茶 = chá, tea
- 跟我来喝茶 could mean “come drink tea with me”
pèiqí, qiáozhì, kuài guòlái, zhèr yǒu qiǎokèlì dàngāo
佩奇,乔治,快过来,这儿有巧克力蛋糕
Peppa, George, come quick, here we have a chocolate cake
- 佩奇 = pèiqí, Peppa Pig
- 乔治 = qiáozhì, George Pig
- 快 = kuài, quick/quickly
- 过来 = guòlái, to come over
- 这儿 = zhèr, here
- 有 = yǒu, to have
- 这儿有 = zhèr yǒu, there is something
- 巧克力 = qiǎokèlì, chocolate (this is an easy word for any English speaking kid to pick up…)
- 蛋糕 = dàngāo, cake
lái le, nǎinai
来了,奶奶
Coming over now, grandma.
- 来了 = lái le, coming over now, a common phrase
pèiqí hé qiáozhì zuìài chī qiǎokèlì dàngāo le
佩奇和乔治最爱吃巧克力蛋糕了
Peppa and George love chocolate cakes.
- 最 = zuì, most
- 爱 = ài, to love
- 吃 = chī, to eat
- 最爱 = zuìài, like something very much in this context. Technically it doesn’t have to be the favorite. Note that when you say “最喜欢” or ”最爱” something, you have to add the 了 in the end of the sentence otherwise it doesn’t sound right.
dànshì jīntiān tāmen gǎnzhe yào qù hé yīngwǔ bōlì yìqǐ wánr
但是今天他们赶着要去和鹦鹉波利一起玩儿
But today they are in a hurry to play with Polly Parrot.
- 但是 = dànshì, but
- 今天 = jīntiān, today
- 他们 = tāmen, they
- 赶着要去 = gǎnzhe yào qù, in a hurry to do something. For example, 早晨妈妈赶着要去上班 = zǎochén māma gǎnzhe yào qù shàngbān. In the morning, mom is in a hurry to get to work.
- 鹦鹉 = yīngwǔ, Parrot
- 波利 = bōlì, Polly
- 一起 = yìqǐ, together
- 玩 = wán, to play. Read about how to use er-coloring in my focused article.
wǒ chī wánle
我吃完了
I’m done eating.
- 完了 = wánle, done, often added to a verb. On it’s own, it could mean “it’s all over!” (bad) or it’s done (neutral), depending on the context.
nǐmen liǎnggè xiǎojiāhuǒ kě zhēn chǎo ā
你们两个小家伙可真吵啊
You two little ones are so noisy.
- 两个 = liǎnggè, two. You should almost always use liang3 for measure word instead of er when you’re referring to exactly two units of something. Read my post on 二 vs 两.
- 小家伙 = xiǎojiāhuǒ, little ones.
- 吵 = chǎo, noisy.
- 可真吵 = kě zhēn chǎo, so noisy.
nǎinai, wǒmen xiànzài kěyǐ líkāi cānzhuō qù hé yīngwǔ bōlì wán le ma
奶奶,我们现在可以离开餐桌去和鹦鹉波利玩了吗
Grandma, can we leave the table to play with Polly Parrot?
- 奶奶 = nǎinai, grandma
- 我们 = wǒmen, we/us
- 现在 = xiànzài, now
- 可以 = kěyǐ, able to / can
- 离开 = líkāi, to leave
- 餐桌 = cānzhuō, dinning table
- 去 = qù, to go
- Honestly this sentence is obviously translated from an English sentence. 离开餐桌 = li2kai1 can1zhuo1 doesn’t sound natural, and if you omit it no meaning would have been lost.
nǐmen liǎnggè quèdìng dàngāo yǐjīng chī gānjìng le ma
你们两个确定蛋糕已经吃干净了吗
Are you two sure you’ve finished eating the cake?
- 确定 = quèdìng, being sure of
- 已经 = yǐjīng, already
- 干净 = gānjìng, clean
- 吃干净了 = chī gānjìng le, finished eating. In Chinese culture, lots of parents/grandparents expect their kids to finish their plates, or eat them clean.
- The sentence structure isn’t very authentic here. It’s obviously translated from “are you sure…”. Don’t memorize this structure for Chinese. My grandma would have just asked 都吃干净了吗? = dōu chī gānjìngle ma?
nà jiù qù wánr ba
那就去玩儿吧
Then you can go play.
- 那就 = nà jiù, well then
zǒu lòu
走喽
Going!
- 走 = zǒu, to go, to leave, to set out for somewhere
